Spread

Print 2021

Since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, there has been a huge increase in racist acts against people of Asian descent around the world. Was this racism developed in response to the pandemic? Or is it an excuse to finally say out loud racist thoughts that they already had?

Spread is a book that aims to give a voice to the Canadian Asian community, allowing them to talk about their experiences with racism throughout their lives, but also during the pandemic, which only amplified it.

This project uses typography to showcase all the horrible, hurtful and racist comments the Asian community has succumbed to over the years - to give a voice and to highlight their real experiences during these difficult times. Spread makes a parallel between the situation during the COVID-10 pandemic and the racist historic past towards the Asian community in Canada. It is a learning opportunity for the reader to better understand a reality that may be unfamiliar to them and to bring about a reflection on the racial injustices in our country.
